Look closely - it runs over TWO hours - Oddball tribute to Saturday morning cartoon TV shows
I have to admit this is a quirky DVD - in many ways (more below) - but I did like it (well most of it) and I can definitely recommend it to those who love Mystery Science Theatre. I don't know if this series ever ran on TV - there's little to tell me that.
There are also a bunch of reviews posted already and a few complain about the "length" of the DVD. This is part of the quirkiness I mentioned. There is one section titled "Episode One" that runs 30 minutes. It's includes the talking main characters (Captain, Franky Planky, etc) and 3 full cartoons (Casper, etc.). BUT then there is the BONUS : The All Star Show which run 90 minutes! It has more full length cartoons (all appear to be public domain like Superman. Little Lulu, etc. - but quite a few Dave Fleisher-directed ones.) Add the fake commercial parodies and a really dumb interview (rather a non-interview) with animator Butch Hartman (A guy I never heard of but apparently has a show on Nickelodeon Network) and a music video...
A Bit Of Nostalgia In New Packaging: DVD Details For This Pleasing Homage To Saturday Morning Memories
Growing up, I didn't have the numerous entertainment choices that contemporary kids do. Believe it or not, we were so deprived that we only had four (yes, four!) channels. But Saturday mornings were a time to look forward to. It was the one specific portion of the week where kid's programming ruled the airwaves. Looking back, plenty of the shows I watched were just plain silly! But that's part of their charm, part of their nostalgia. "Cartoon Lagoon" is a program that embraces this inherent silliness and, therefore, works on its own terms. It mixes the old with the new and makes one remember more innocent days. As an adult, I quite enjoyed this collection. But I don't know if it will connect as strongly with children who haven't been exposed to the shows for which this is a homage. A modern day puppet skit, classic cartoons, and Mystery Science Theater 3000-type commentary combine for a lively presentation.
The DVD has three sections:
1) Episode One: Unhappy...
For fans of Saturday Mornings - when it meant something
If you're a fan of Mystery Science Theatre 3000, you'll enjoy this DVD. Part of the DVD is a very funny tribute to MST3K, with some of the best riffing you'll find outside of Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic. The second, and longer, main feature is the All-Star review, which is a bit reminiscent of "Night Flight", as you'll see classic cartoons, short films, computer animation, music videos, and comedy sketches. But it's presented more as a trubute to Saturday morning cartoons from the 70's and 80's. Extras include a fun and informative audio commentary from writer/creator/voice-actor Manny Galan, which provides a lot of insight into how the show was created, and a lot of the creative decisions that had to be made on how to properly riff the cartoons that are presented.
